Just one day after the three year anniversary of more than 60 tornadoes that killed over 250 people in Alabama, tornadoes once again flattened homes and killed dozens of people across Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas.  Unfortunately, more tornadoes are expected throughout the week.
In the United States there are two areas that experience an unusually high number of tornadoes, one is tornado alley which is made up of several states in the Midwest, and the other is Florida.

The number of tornadoes in Florida is simply due to the large number of thunderstorms the state experiences.  These two regions combined are the reason the United States has more tornadoes than any other country in the world.

Although the Midwest experiences the majority of its tornadoes for a two and half month period, Florida is at risk for tornadoes throughout the year, especially during the summer months.

Fortunately, most Florida homeowner’s insurance policies coverage damage caused by a tornado to the structure of a home as well as the contents inside of the home.  There are also other options available to homeowners insurance policy such as coverage for living expenses at a separate location in the event your home is destroyed and is unlivable while it is being repaired or rebuilt.  In addition, homeowners should make sure that all of their valuable items in their homes such as jewelry, antiques, electronics, etc. are adequately covered under their policy.  For those who rent, rental insurance can also be purchased to cover the contents of items in the home.
